Irish host families are known around the world for their wonderful welcome, their openness, warmth and genuine hospitality.
Our Host Families in Ireland are from varying backgrounds and traditions but all have one feature in common which is their genuine welcome for their foreign students and their Irish failte extended so freely to strangers and visitors. Many of our Irish Host families are traditional families (mother-father-children), but we also have are single-parent families, young couples, retired couples and people who live alone (mostly women). We match our incoming students with a family suited to their profile, and this is a major part of the success of our service. Some families host on a regular basis, some host just when it is convenient for them, for the pleasure of hospitality, or to do something useful during their holiday. Our Host Family profiles are very diverse: teachers who offer hospitality and language tuition to students in their own home environment; mothers at home willing to accommodate other children; single people happy to share their favourite hobby with a guest; older students ready to welcome foreign young visitors during their holiday time, retired couples pleased to share their daily life and the knowledge they have of their area; and so on. The one thing they all agree on is that hosting is a rewarding experience for both host family and visiting students and enriches the lives of all linguistically, culturally, academically and professionally. Why choose to learn English in a homestay setting?
The strong focus of this language program is that children are not in a camp or a group accommodation, but hosted by an Irish family chosen for them. The benefits of this type of stay are many: It promotes a better understanding of the Irish culture and way of thinking and living. There is constant daily exposure to spoken English in everyday settings which gives unparallelled training for the understanding of spoken English. There is constant practice of English conversation which helps build confidence and vocabulary for everyday use. There is individual attention. Life skills of students are enhanced during this stay, it builds resilience and independence in the student. International friendships develop and enrich the lives of both the host family and the visiting student. The English Language Immersion-holiday programme increases motivation for the English language, and heightens awareness of the essential nature of English proficiency. These all benefit the student both at a personal level and in the future as a professionall in whatever area they choose to pursue a career.
